Watching these vines brought back memories of the vine craze in middle school. It was by far the most popular form of social media at the time. The hilarious, six-second videos could be shared with anyone and it spread like wildfire for young teenagers. What made them so popular was that anyone with a smartphone could film and share vines with people on the web. Not only were vines intended to be funny, they were also a creative outlet for so many people as well. A teen named Zach King was “vine famous” for his magic tricks that he was able to show off through the app. The music industry also benefitted immensely, whether it was a viral dance craze or a comedic use of the song. Pieces of choreography for new and old songs turned them into stars and Vine-famous moves like the Whip and Nae-Nae as well as the Quan were shown off. We all need a good laugh occasionally and watching your vine references allowed me to do just that. Some of my favorites were the “calling all country boys” and the “I can’t believe you done this”, and who can forget the classic waffle house fight. With Vine came a new approach to comedy, one that had never been seen before. What vine gave us was a place where we could show off the things we enjoyed most. It allowed people from all different backgrounds to come together on a shared platform and ultimately bring joy to each other. Though the individual six-second videos are short, the long-lasting effects of Vine linger on still today.

It's interesting that the format was so accessible to everyone and yet also there were a few main popular ones. What were the important features of the famous ones? Is it just that these were the ones that randomly came to the top? I imagine there were local and regional vines too--even vines specific to a single group of friends. The social dimension is quite interesting.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that I have ever considered the effect of Vine on anything more than comedy. You are correct that people became famous for more than just comedic videos. It is also interesting to note that most of the vines that absolutely everyone knows are the ones that make us laugh. Maybe we feel a stronger connection to them in particular because they caused an emotional response from us (laughter/joy). It could also be because the comedic vines are the ones that were shared more often, or that they are easier to reference.
ReplyDeleteI remember back in middle school when Vines we're the hit thing and I even used to make some with my friends and looking backs years later, I'm trying to figure out why I thought I was even close to being funny. But I do remember the hit dance moves and that a bunch of musically talented people were all about Vine, it made me so happy because I could literally sit there and listen or watch the Vine over and over again because it would never stop replaying!!
