FYW- Response to Lead Blog Post #10 (The Hangover)
I have never seen any of The Hangover movies, but I have definitely heard people talk about them. I watched the scene where Alan is holding the baby in the elevator and I thought it was funny how serious he was when he named it Carlos. To me, the benign violation theory plays a big role in the scene where he is making the baby make obscene gestures. That is not something that someone would normally find humorous, but I think since it is supposed to be a funny movie it is benign enough that it is okay. However, we still see it as a violation because we don’t expect someone to make a baby do that. I also watched the scene where Alan was driving around with a giraffe and then ran into a bridge and killed it. I personally didn’t find this funny, but it represented incongruity theory because I was not expecting that to happen. There was also incongruity in the scene where he was at the funeral and said: “I can think of so many other people that I would have liked to die first.... like my mother.” It is incongruous because of course, we don’t expect anyone to say that about their mother. I can agree with you that this movie is so popular because it incorporates so many types of humor and I could see pieces of each theory incorporated into different scenes. I would like to watch the entire movie!
I don't know if you remember Old School, but I feel like it was sort of the original version of the hangover. It's a good place to start if you want to explore the explosion of this genre of humor.
ReplyDeleteI also love how serious he is in naming the baby Carlos. The part about that scene that makes it so funny is that he waits to say that the baby is named Carlos until after Phil has already said that the baby was named something else.
